Nigerian Scams: How it has badly hit Nigerians

By Steven Gerritse on February 24, 2013 in Scams

Brief Review of Nigerian Scams:

Yes, we do hear of Nigerian scams all the time.
You need no one to tell you that Nigerian scams are typically scams that originate from Nigeria.
Many Americans have been duped in recent years by these Nigerian ’419′ scams. They call it ’419′ because it’s the number that represents the criminal code for these scams in the Nigerian constitution.
A typical Nigerian scam often trap its victims via conversations on email.
These Nigerian 419 scams has really become very popular over the past few years on the internet because of the high number of people that fall victim of these scams on a regular basis particularly in the United States.

These Nigerian scams could be in form of employment scams, lottery scams, romance scams or phishing scams.

Nigerian Scams: Its impact on Nigerians

Of course you shouldn’t expect these Nigerian scams to have a positive impact on Nigerians.

On the economy:

Due to this Nigerian scams, the economy of the Nigerian society has been dwindling over the past few years because everyone who can help Nigeria in terms of its economy always thinks that they would be scammed.
That is the sign of a corrupt society, the leaders will not be able to coordinate the their activities and duties the way they ought to be. This in turn would lead to misunderstanding and disunity among them.

On social-welfare:

Everyone outside of Nigeria now thinks that ‘All Nigerians are Scammers’ and therefore should be avoided. It just looks like all Nigerians have been infected with the AIDS pandemic and should be avoided. This brings no good to Nigeria at all because as a Nigerian, you cannot easily deal with someone outside of Nigeria either for a business, trip e.t.c without being suspected of scam. It’s just like a bad tribal mark on every Nigerian.

On internet marketing:

Being a Nigerian internet marketer is cool but since you bear that name ‘Nigeria’, you will see hell.
I mean, for christ sake, as an internet marketer, you should enjoy benefits that others enjoy but this is not the case if you’re a Nigerian.
For instance, some important websites will not allow you to do business with them if you’re using a Nigerian I.P address. You cannot even register on the site talk-less of doing business with them. This is because they bear this notion in mind that “All Nigerians are Scammers” and not even one is worthy of being Scam-free.

This is another instance, Paypal, the largest payment processor in the world does not allow registrations from Nigeria. This is just same thing we’re talking about here. I wonder how you will succeed with your business as an internet marketer if you do not have a paypal account.
Paypal takes the responsibility of processing all transactions between a business firm and its customers securely. They thought that bringing Nigeria into the whole game show would spoil every of their business plans.
So, for this reason, every Nigerian internet marketer should find another means of processing their own transactions and not with Paypal.
For christ sake, not every Nigerians are Scammers , why should Nigerians be treated this way? There are genuine internet marketers in Nigeria that focus on their business without ever thinking of the word “scam” and scamming people.
Statistics have it that majority of internet scams abide in the U.S.A, Spain, and other countries like that. But these people still have access to all internet facilities all over the world. Why should Nigeria’s case be different?

Conclusion on Nigerian Scams Online:

Yes i know, these scams are bad but the punishment is rather too much and has a more negative impact on innocent Nigerians.
The best way to control these scams is to trace the I.P addresses that these scams usually come from and deal with them rather than to ban all Nigerian I.P addresses from accessing important websites online.
If you have read this article up to this point, then you should have realized that not “All Nigerians are Scammers”. Majority of Nigerians are good people who deal with real people.
Please let’s give Nigerians the chance to enjoy other benefits that the rest of the world enjoy especially on the internet.
